Education and Training
The Cytogenetics Laboratory at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center is committed to education and training in clinical cytogenetics and genomic medicine. As part of a Harvard-affiliated academic medical center, we provide structured educational experiences for pathology residents, laboratory trainees, and technologists, with a focus on the integration of cytogenetic and genomic data into clinical practice.
Pathology Resident Education
Beginning with the 2026 academic year, the Cytogenetics Laboratory will offer a formal cytogenetics rotation as part of the core Clinical Pathology (CP) training program for pathology residents. This rotation is designed to provide comprehensive exposure to clinical cytogenetics, including both conventional and molecular techniques.
During the rotation, residents gain hands-on experience in karyotype analysis, fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), and chromosomal microarray interpretation. Emphasis is placed on understanding the role of cytogenetic abnormalities in hematologic malignancies, solid tumors, and constitutional disorders.
Residents participate in case-based learning, including correlation of cytogenetic findings with hematopathology, molecular diagnostics, and clinical presentation. The rotation also includes exposure to laboratory workflow, test selection, result interpretation, and report generation.
Through direct interaction with laboratory directors, residents develop a practical understanding of how cytogenetic data informs diagnosis, prognosis, and clinical decision-making in modern genomic medicine.
Technologist Education and Training
The Cytogenetics Laboratory provides comprehensive training for cytogenetics technologists, including both entry-level and advanced personnel. Training is conducted in a structured, hands-on environment with progressive responsibility.
Technologists are trained in all aspects of cytogenetic laboratory operations, including specimen processing, sterile tissue culture technique, chromosome harvesting, slide preparation, and analysis of karyotype and FISH results. Training also includes exposure to chromosomal microarray workflows and automated imaging systems.
Emphasis is placed on technical proficiency, quality assurance, and accurate data analysis, as well as the clinical significance of cytogenetic findings. Technologists work closely with laboratory directors and senior staff to develop both technical expertise and an understanding of clinical applications.
This training environment supports the development of highly skilled laboratory professionals and provides a strong foundation for careers in clinical laboratory science, genetics, and related fields.
Interdisciplinary Learning
The Cytogenetics Laboratory collaborates with other clinical and diagnostic services, including hematopathology, molecular pathology, and oncology. Educational activities include interdisciplinary case discussions, tumor board participation, and integration of cytogenetic findings into broader diagnostic frameworks.
These interactions provide trainees with a comprehensive understanding of how cytogenetics contributes to patient care within a multidisciplinary clinical environment.
