Ulrike Kappes, MD, PhD, MPH, FACMG
Director of Cancer Cytogenetics and Genomics
Dr. Ulrike Kappes is Director of Cancer Cytogenetics at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and a faculty member at Harvard Medical School. She holds an MD and PhD from Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg in Germany and a Master of Public Health from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. Dr. Kappes is board certified by the American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ABMGG) in Laboratory Genetics and Genomics and Clinical Molecular Genetics and Genomics .
Dr. Kappes brings extensive experience in both academic medicine and clinical laboratory leadership, having previously served in leadership roles at Tufts Medical Center and the Medical College of Wisconsin, where she directed genomic and cytogenetics laboratories and advanced molecular diagnostic testing programs. Her expertise spans cytogenetics, molecular genetics, and genomic diagnostics across hematologic malignancies, solid tumors, and constitutional disorders. At BIDMC, she leads cancer cytogenetics services and is actively involved in integrating cytogenetic and molecular data for clinical interpretation and patient care. She also plays a key role in education, teaching residents and fellows, and advancing translational research in genomic medicine. She collaborates closely with Dr. Wang in the integrated interpretation and sign-out of cases across the full spectrum of clinical cytogenetics.

Jia-Chi (Jack) Wang, MD, PhD, FACMG, FCCMG
Director of Constitutional Cytogenetics and Quality Assurance in Molecular Pathology
Dr. Jia-Chi (Jack) Wang is Director of Constitutional Cytogenetics and a nationally and internationally recognized expert in clinical cytogenetics and cytogenomics. He holds MD and PhD degrees and is board certified in medical genetics, with fellowship status in both the American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics (FACMG) and the Canadian College of Medical Geneticists (FCCMG) .
Prior to joining Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Dr. Wang served as Executive Director of Cytogenomics at City of Hope National Medical Center, a leading comprehensive cancer center, where he oversaw high-volume clinical cytogenetic and genomic testing services. He has held multiple leadership roles across major academic and diagnostic institutions, including faculty appointments at McMaster University and international collaborations in Taiwan, where he contributed to the establishment and advancement of cytogenetics as a clinical discipline.
Dr. Wang’s expertise includes chromosomal microarray analysis, prenatal and postnatal cytogenetics, and the interpretation of complex genomic rearrangements. At BIDMC, he directs constitutional cytogenetics and quality assurance within molecular pathology. He collaborates closely with Dr. Kappes in the integrated interpretation and sign-out of cases across the full spectrum of clinical cytogenetics.
